Summary
Duties include leveling and shoveling asphalt pavement. Could operate equipment used for applying asphalt, or other materials to road beds, parking lots, and taxiways, or equipment used for tamping gravel, dirt, or other materials. Includes asphalt paving machine operators, form tampers, tamping machine operators, and stone spreader operators. May assist other craft workers.This work is conducted under direction of the Manager by performing the following duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead
Set out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic - Control traffic
Drive heavy equipment and vehicles
Haul and spread sand, gravel, and dirt to fill washouts and repair road shoulders
Dump, spread, and tamp asphalt
Observe distribution of paving material to indicate low spots to add material
Light burners or start heating units of machines, and regulate screed temperatures and asphalt flow rates
Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment, using mechanics' hand tools, or report malfunctions to supervisors
Fill tanks, hoppers, or machines with paving materials
Set up and tear down equipment
Coordinate truck dumping
Learn and follow safety regulations
Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects
Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met
Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members
Read plans, instructions, or specifications to determine work activities
Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where paving work will be performed
Load, unload, or identify building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications
Engage in good work procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety
Willingness to develop all skills required to perform as a member of the highly skilled production paving crew under the direction of the paving superintendent
May perform other related duties such as adding or removing screed extensions, installing and removing automatic devices, grade log or other accessories associated with the machine. May also perform other related duties that pertain to asphalt paving operations
Complete work to ensure conformance to specifications, standards, and contract requirements
Maintain and clean tools, equipment, or materials to ensure items are in usable condition
Listen to supervisory personnel, contractors, or design professionals to discuss and resolve matters, such as work procedures, complaints, or construction problems
Participate in company safety rules, safety meetings and in tool box talks

Requires daytime, nighttime & some weekend hours. Travel will be required inside the company's operational area
Report to the assigned job site with appropriate personal protective equipment and ready to begin work at the designated start time
Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual
Strict adherence to Dolomite policies and procedures as outlined in the Safety Handbook
Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Class B CDL with proper endorsements preferred
Must pass pre-employment physical exam, pre-employment controlled substance testing and criminal background check before being employed by Dolomite Products Company and/or Callanan Industries, Inc.
Personal Protective Equipment
Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to: Fall Protection, Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, Safety Glasses and safety vests.
Qualification/Requirements
Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations, using some combination of skills and abilities.
A strong commitment to safety and adherence to applicable federal, state and local regulations is a must.
OSHA 10 hour certification is required.
Education and/or Experience
A high school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
Minimum 2 years' experience raking asphalt on a highly skilled production paving crew.
Communication and Language Skills
Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to comprehend and communicate to others the requirements of technical specifications, regulations, reports, and manuals.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply commonsense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. The individual have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Also must be able to define problems, collect data, establish fact and draw valid conclusions.
Physical Demands
Walking several miles per day, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and traveling over irregular terrain. Some tasks involve: prolonged periods of standing and/or exposure to noise or weather, good motor coordination, finger dexterity, and color discrimination. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Capable of lifting heavy objects and equipment. All essential duties must be performed without posing a direct threat to their own, or others, health and safety, with or without the use of a reasonable accommodation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is occasionally very loud and may require protective equipment.
